About Luke & Vault SOP Systems

Why VAULT Exists

This was never just a business idea.

I’m Luke Steven Datson, founder of Vault SOP Systems. My journey into cannabis didn’t start with a brand, a website or an opportunity to make money.

It started with my daughter.

Where the passion began

From around the age of five, my daughter experienced recurring seizures. What followed was a long period of appointments, investigations and uncertainty before she was diagnosed with occipital lobe epilepsy.

As her father, I wanted to understand everything I possibly could. The treatment options being discussed raised serious concerns for me, so I researched relentlessly and looked carefully at the choices available to our family.

That experience led me to take a deeper interest in cannabis research and the responsibilities surrounding its lawful production and use.

I am not claiming that CBD caused my daughter’s seizures to stop, and our family’s experience is not medical advice.
I can only tell you what happened in our lives.

Watching that journey changed the direction of my life. What began as a father trying to understand something that might help his child became a much deeper respect for cannabis, its cultivation, its compounds, its processing and the responsibility that comes with working with it properly.

Learning the hard way

As my involvement with CBD and cannabis developed, I entered the industry commercially. That eventually brought me face-to-face with the complexity of UK cannabis law.

I was prosecuted in connection with the importation and possession with intent to supply of cannabis flower that I believed could lawfully be dealt with as low-THC hemp/CBD flower.

I challenged what happened.

The case ultimately reached the Court of Appeal.

In R v Luke Steven Derwood Datson [2022] EWCA Crim 1248, the Court of Appeal allowed my appeal and quashed all three convictions.

The judgment found that adverse legal rulings at the original trial had wrongly prevented me from advancing arguments I was entitled to put before a jury.

That experience taught me something I have never forgotten:

Words matter. Definitions matter. Evidence matters. Process matters. Understanding the rules matters.

In a regulated industry, assumptions can have enormous consequences.

Another side of the same industry

My experience with cannabis law did not end there. As a legally prescribed medical-cannabis patient, I later faced a separate driving allegation after testing above the specified THC threshold.

I maintained that I had taken my prescribed medicine as directed and that I was not impaired. That matter did not result in a conviction.

I do not claim that my case created or changed UK driving law. What it did do was reinforce, again, how important precise wording, evidence and proper understanding are when cannabis, regulation and real life meet.

From patient and parent to operator

Over the years, my involvement with cannabis moved far beyond personal research. I worked in legal CBD cultivation in Guernsey and later helped establish a medical cultivation facility.

Wide overview of a commercial cannabis greenhouse

I learned from growers, operators and real-world production environments. I saw propagation, cultivation, plant management, processing, equipment, hygiene, records and facility operations from the inside.

And I saw something that became impossible to ignore:

There is extraordinary knowledge in this industry, but too much of it lives only inside people’s heads.

One experienced operator leaves and years of knowledge can walk out of the door with them. One person trains differently from another. One facility develops a brilliant process but never captures it properly. Complex procedures become handwritten notes, outdated files or documents created to satisfy a requirement rather than help the person actually doing the work.

That became VAULT

Vault SOP Systems exists to capture real operational knowledge and turn it into something controlled, visual, practical and repeatable.

Not paperwork for the sake of paperwork. Not generic templates written by somebody who has never stood inside the environment they are describing. And not documents designed to sit untouched in a folder.

Systems built to be used.

  • Clear enough for the operator carrying out the process.
  • Detailed enough to support serious commercial operations.
  • Structured enough to support training, consistency and accountability.
  • Designed well enough that people actually want to engage with them.

Why I care so much about getting it right

People sometimes ask why I obsess over the details: the wording, the sequence, the records, the release gates, the layout, the readability and whether the whole document still works on a phone.

The answer is simple.

I’ve lived what happens when details matter.

I’ve experienced cannabis as a father trying to understand what was happening to his daughter.

I’ve experienced it through research.

I’ve experienced it as a prescribed patient.

I’ve experienced its legal complexity.

I’ve experienced it inside cultivation facilities.

And I’ve experienced what happens when knowledge is captured properly — and when it isn’t.

Those experiences gave me enormous respect for both the potential of cannabis and the responsibility that comes with working with it.

VAULT is where everything I have learned comes together.

Capture the knowledge.
Make it understandable.
Make it repeatable.
Raise the standard.

Because if something matters enough to do, it matters enough to understand properly.
